-Total Physical Response (TPR)
An order or instruction is given, with the aim to induce a physical response. At first, the teacher exemplifies the action, and the students copy. Then, children can start following the instruction on their own.
Monitor Model:
Based around the following hypothesis:
Acquisition- Learning: There are two ways of learning a language. Acquisition is the natural, subconscious process that requires meaningful interaction in the target language. Meaning > form. Learning, on the other hand, is the conscious study of 'rules' (grammar).
According to Krashen methods focused on acquisition are more effective than those that focus on formal instruction.
Monitor: Learning (conscious knowledge of grammatical rules) acts as monitor to correct and modify any mistakes learnt in the acquisition process.
Natural order: Grammatical structures are acquired in a predictable sequence.
Input: The acquisition of language takes place when input (received information) presents superior information to that which is already understood.
Affective filter: It takes into account non-linguistic factors like emotional states. Formal academic settings can generate negative feelings such as boredom, nervousness or embarrassment that will negatively affect the learner's ability to learn. This is called the 'affective filter' and it is important for the teacher to lessen this effect and create a respectful, inspiring, relaxed and comfortable classroom environment.
